Answers to common questions about orthodontic treatment

Have questions about orthodontic treatment? We’ve put together answers to some of the most common things patients ask us. Whether you’re just getting started or simply curious about what to expect, this guide will help you feel more comfortable and prepared for your visit.

Both dentists and orthodontists care for your teeth, but they focus on different things. Dentists provide general care such as cleanings, fillings, and crowns. Orthodontists complete additional years of training after dental school to specialize in straightening teeth, correcting bite problems, and guiding jaw growth with braces or Invisalign.

Some common signs include:

  • Crowded, crooked, or spaced-out teeth
  • Bites that don’t line up properly (overbite, underbite, or open bite)
  • Teeth that stick out too far
  • Difficulty chewing or uneven wear on teeth
  • The jaw shifting to one side when biting
  • Thumb-sucking habits that continue past early childhood

If you notice any of these, a consultation can give you clear answers.

Straightening your teeth does more than improve your smile. Orthodontic care can:

  • Boost confidence and self-esteem
  • Make brushing and flossing easier
  • Improve chewing comfort
  • Reduce strain on the jaw
  • Lower the risk of chips or injuries

Of course, many patients also love how much more confident they feel once their smile looks the way they’ve always wanted.

Treatment time varies from person to person. Many patients finish in about 18 to 24 months, though some cases are shorter and more complex ones may take longer. At your first consultation, Dr. DiGiovanni will provide a personalized timeline so you’ll know what to expect.

Most patients come in every 4 to 8 weeks. These visits are usually short and allow the orthodontist to check progress, make adjustments, and keep everything moving on track. Staying on schedule helps make sure your treatment finishes on time.

Most patients don’t need extractions. However, if your teeth are very crowded, removing one or more may be recommended to create space and ensure the best results. This is only suggested when it’s truly necessary.

No. Routine orthodontic treatment does not require shots. Braces, Invisalign, and regular adjustments are completed without injections.

Yes, retainers are very important. They hold your teeth in place once braces or Invisalign are finished. Most people wear them full time for the first few months, then just at night. Following your retainer plan protects your new smile for years to come.

It’s natural for teeth to move slightly over time. Everyday habits like chewing or clenching, as well as normal aging, can cause small changes. Retainers prevent this and help keep your smile straight long after treatment is complete.

Yes, we welcome transfer patients. If you’ve started treatment elsewhere and need to continue with a new orthodontist, we can help. Bringing your records or X-rays makes the process smoother, but if you don’t have them, we can still get you back on track.
