INVISALIGN PALATE EXPANDER

DiGiovanni Orthodontics was one of the first offices to use this removable palate expander

THE INVISALIGN PALATAL EXPANDER overview

Why would my child want a removable expander?

  • It is removable. This enables the patient to brush and floss the teeth without extra efforts and there are no dietary restrictions- you can eat anything you like!
  • The expander is precisely 3D printed and follows the curvature of the palate extremely well. The custom curvature makes the expander very comfortable
  • The activations are small so there is really no pain

SO, why would my child not want a removable expander?

It is removable. It has to be worn 22 hours per day. It takes a ton of discipline and responsibility to wear this all the time. If you don’t wear it, it doesn’t work. If you lose it, it doesn’t work. But if your child is very responsible with this type of thing (keeping track of phone, eye glasses, etc.), they would likely be an excellent candidate for the Invisalign expander!

About the Expander: The Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE) is made of 3D-printed nylon and follows the curvature of the palate. It consists of a series of expanders that apply small daily changes (0.25 mm) and are worn full-time per Dr. DiGiovanni’s custom prescription.

Most kids can easily place it in and out on their own, and it doesn’t interfere with meals or daily hygiene.

FAQ

Invisalign for kids is a specially designed clear aligner system for children ages 6 to 10 who show signs of early orthodontic concerns. It works during a child’s growth phase to guide jaw development, create space for permanent teeth, and address issues like crowding, crossbite, and protruding teeth. Starting early can help prevent more serious problems later and reduce the need for extractions or longer treatments in the teen years.

This approach to early care can boost confidence and improve function with less discomfort, more flexibility, and a more kid-friendly experience.

If your child is between the ages of 6 and 10 and has early signs of orthodontic issues like crowding, narrow arches, or bite problems, they might be a great fit. We’ll assess this at your consultation.

Invisalign First is tailored specifically for kids. It accounts for growing jaws and erupting teeth and includes design features to help guide development while addressing orthodontic issues early.

Yes. For Invisalign First to be effective, aligners should be worn at least 20 to 22 hours a day, just like regular Invisalign. They can be removed to eat, brush, and floss.

Consistency is key! If aligners aren’t worn as directed, treatment won’t be effective. That’s why this treatment is best for kids who can manage the responsibility of daily wear.

We schedule regular check-ins to monitor progress and make sure everything is on track. Plus, the aligners fit differently as teeth move, so you and your child will see the difference as their smile transforms.
